Specs at a Glance

The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas and Tiguan are two of the sleekest, most refined family crossovers on the road. The Atlas is a star midsize model, designed especially for American families, with three rows of roomy seating and road-trip-friendly cargo space. The Tiguan is a small crossover, doing double duty as a daily commuter and family hauler. Unlike most small crossovers, the Tiguan offers an optional third-row seat, so it’s a viable pick for growing families. Besides differences in size, there are some differences in performance, appearance, and feature content you should know about. Check out our comparison guide to get a handle on which crossover is right for your daily drive.

Performance

In the midsize 2019 Volkswagen Atlas, you’ll find one of two engines. The entry-level Atlas S trim features a turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated for 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. When you upgrade to higher trims, you get a 3.6-liter V6 that upgrades performance with 276 horses and 266 pound-feet of torque.

Back on the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan, all trim levels get the same engine. The Tiguan’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque for a smooth, sporty ride around town and up the highway.

Appearance

As a midsize model, the Volkswagen Atlas is, of course, the bigger crossover. In addition to its size, the Atlas has a square front end for an increasingly rugged look. Outside, the Tiguan has a sleeker appearance. It looks more European than the made-for-Americans Atlas. Remember that the Tiguan also offers an optional third-row seat, so it can compete with the Atlas in terms of passenger space.

Features

Here, the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas and Tiguan have just about everything in common. Both crossovers come standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto technology, giving you hands-free access to your smartphone and even displaying your maps app on the central touchscreen. As you climb the trim levels, you’ll find increasing levels of comfort with leather upholstery and three-zone climate control. High-tech safety features – such as the lane-keeping assist and forward collision mitigation systems – actively help you avoid danger. The Car-Net subscription services send help when you need it most, such as after a collision or unexpected engine trouble. High-tech conveniences save you plenty of time on the go. These include push-button start and a power liftgate.
